About the Artist

The painting shows the Kanapurtja Kungka [young Tjingarri women] Kungka pirnniku pitjantja [young women coming from all directions] in the artist’s birth- country. The Kanapurtja Kungka were all travelling on one side with Wati [initiated men] travelling along with them on the other.

The Tjingarri Tjukurrpa covers all the country around Kurily, and the design is also painted onto the bodies of dancers in ceremonies for this Dreaming. The word “Marapintji” refers to the ritual piercing of the nasal septum and is cleared for general use in titles and captions.

Highly sacred stories known only to senior community members lie underneath.
