Plenary 2 - Healing / Health

Gabriel Bani

“Ngay Gabriel Bani, Athe Barin Koey ngep Ngay Wagadagam Koey Buway, Ngay Koedal, Ngay bibiril Kuki, Ngay Baydham Zugub.”

I am a direct descendent of Bari, who is the Koey Mabayg (Head man) of the Major Tribe of Wagadagam, a sovereign nation of people. My tribal totem is Koedal (crocodile), my tribal wind is Kuki Guuba (Northwest Wind), my tribal constellation is Baydham (shark), and my tribal tongue is ‘Mabuyag’ which is a dialect of the Kala Lagaw Ya, the Western Island language. I am a fluent speaker of my native tongue Kala Lagaw Ya, which is his first language, Torres Strait Creole my second, and English my third language. My tribe is located on Mabuyag (Mabuiag Island). Mabuyag is situated in the Near Western Islands of the Torres Strait, the Maluyligal Nation.

I am the second eldest son of the late, Adhi Ephraim Bani OAM, 7th Traditional Tribal Chief of Wagadagam, Linguist, Historian, and Cultural Ambassador of Torres Strait.

Commencing my career as a youth worker in 1985, I spent over two decades as a Counsellor and Program Manager in the coordination of Alcohol and Drugs, Mental Health and Social work services in the Torres Strait District Health Services. In 1997, I was part of the leadership and management team, who developed the Primary Health Care services in the Torres Health District, thus creating a paradigm shift in Health, moving from traditional medical model to a more community based and managed health services.
