Linda Tuhiwai Smith (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Porou) is Professor of Education and Māori Development, and Pro-Vice Chancellor Māori and Dean of the School of Māori and Pacific Development at the University of Waikato. Professor Smith has published widely and is well known for her leading work in Kaupapa Māori research. Her seminal book ‘Decolonising Methodologies Research and Indigenous Peoples’ has been an international best seller since its publication in 1998.
Professor Smith was an inaugural Co Director of Ngā Pae o Te Māramatanga, New Zealand’s Māori Centre of Research Excellence and established Te Kotahi Research Institute for Innovation at the University of Waikato. She is a Fellow of the American Association for Research in Education, a member of the Health Research Council and Chair of the Māori Health Research Committee. In 2013 she became a Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to Māori and education.
